The Journey to our Dream Home..........Come along for the ride:
The story so far:
In 2001 DH and I had a dream, a dream to build our own home on a lovely acreage just on the outskirts of town that we had scrounged every cent to buy.We drove to Adelaide many a weekend to view display homes to get ideas - OMG how many ideas does one need...lol. Did you know that after about the first ten display homes - they all look the same...hehe.We brought home book after book after book, discussed ideas of what rooms we'd like to have and not like to have. I got an A3 piece of blank paper and we cut out the rooms we wanted and spent a few weeks playing jigsaws with the rooms on the page. Twas lots of fun.Eventually we drew up a rough plan of what we had in our head and with the rooms we wanted.
We made an appointment with a Draftsman who came to see us and took all the info away and came back to us with these wonderful plans - everything that was in our head was now on paper - Oh what a feeling...lol.Not long after this DH got a job in the Prison so we ended up moving to another town and went on an open ticket but ended up staying for 5 wonderful years, had a great time, met lovely new friends (whom we still see today).
In the time we were away, a few friend built houses so I came along with my plans and tape measure (with their approval of course) and measured up their rooms to get a visual idea of the sizes of the rooms on our plans. Was a great exercise and we had many laughs together. The best advice I got was from my GF Jodi - make the pantry bigger she said! So I did it's now 2.7m x 3.2m so amply big enough for all the things I want to do...lol.
The plans came in and out of the draw over the five years in MB and we made a few changes in our heads to them but mostly kept what we had cos it worked for us.We came back home to live on the block next door to where we will build about two years ago and put the process of getting plans happening again with the changes about 10 months ago.
Ok next choice is: choose a Builder - there are many choices to make when you want to build a house...luckily we knew what we wanted from the start so made the whole process easier. We were very particular in the fact that we did not want to use a Project Home Builder as we weren't happy with many of the finished products we'd seen and chose to use a local Builder after seeing many of the good ones around us. After being fobbed off by one bloke we ended up talking to a lovely lady consultant who talked us through the process. We had preapproval so just had to make a decision and sign on - so we did.
Bailey Homes have been nothing but wonderful with their Customer Service (working in this area I am pedantic about it and very fussy...lol). Nothing is too much trouble and they don't mind me ringing with questions about the process cos this is our first time building. We have visited some of their display homes and been very impressed with what we've seen...........
Today we've been told our plans are almost ready for approval by Council and Pre-Construction meeting will be in about two weeks then the fun begins but hey after 7 years of planning - BRING IT ON!
to be continued and continued and continued for at least the next six months.......lol!
